Get in on the secret of Egypt’s hidden gem

Marassi is the next big travel destination you’ve probably never heard of. When it comes to Egypt’s most famous tourist spots, most people think of the Pyramids of Giza or the beaches of Sharm El Sheikh, but the up and coming area is sure to be at the top of your travel wish list very soon.

A hidden gem on the northern coast, alongside the idyllic waterfront of Sidi Abdel Rahman Bay, Marassi is a tranquil 6.5 million-square metre resort that looks like it belongs on a postcard: think flawless white beaches, crystal clear turquoise waters and vast stretches of greenery.

It’s just a few miles from the historic town of El Alamein, but it couldn’t be more different. While it’s true that a large part of Egypt’s appeal has always come from its history – Marassi is as modern as it gets. In fact, this luxurious beachside haven could signal a new era in Egyptian tourism, redefining what a holiday in Egypt can and will be.

Central to the reinvention of Marassi are three new properties to be managed by Emaar Hospitality Group. For premium luxury, there’s Address Marassi Beach Resort, a high-end haven of 140 beautifully designed rooms and suites. In the heart of the marina here, it will offer gorgeous ocean views from its waterfront location and the pristine beach is perfect for relaxing. It will feel like a true escape from the city thanks to relaxing interiors that feature warm wood tones and natural stonework, with meandering paths through the landscaped garden providing welcome greenery to the resort.

Also in development is Address Marassi Golf Resort & Spa, a smaller, boutique-style property with just 49 units. It will, however, boast an 18-hole golf course, which will provide gorgeous views of the ocean and the marina when you’re teeing off. Part of this project also includes Address Residences Marassi Golf Resort & Spa. Perfect for long term guests, this property will have 68 serviced residences, with stylish rooms and luxury amenities.

Then there will be Vida Marassi Marina, a trendy waterfront resort with open air pools and decks, and 120 rooms and suites offering marina views. The first Vida hotel property to open in Egypt, the rooms will be fashion-forward and filled with natural light, and the glam locale will have access to the yacht club and berthing facilities. It’s definitely set to be a prime spot for the jet set crowd when it opens this year.

I had a chat with Olivier Harnisch, CEO of Emaar Hospitality Group, who is excited about the area’s huge potential.

“It’s a spectacular community and I think, one of our most prestigious international developments. There is something for everyone here, whether you want to tee off at the golf club, go shopping at M’Porium, which is the largest plaza on the north coast, or take the kids to The Park.”

Marking a fourth property for Emaar Hospitality Group in Marassi, the all new Al Alamein Hotel, to be managed by Vida Hotels and Resorts has been redesigned and renovated for the modern. As much as Marassi seems to mark a new era for Egyptian tourism, Emaar has also made sure to pay tribute to the country’s past by taking on the refurbishment of the historic Al Alamein Hotel. Built in 1960, the original property paid host to some of the most important figures in Egyptian history, including the legendary leader Gamal Abdel Nasser Hussein, the second President of Egypt.

“We’re so honoured that Emaar Hospitality Group can be a part of this,” Harnisch said. “We know the original Al Alamein Hotel holds a special place in people’s hearts, so to be tasked with managing it following its renovation to its former glory, and bringing it to a whole new generation of travellers, is something special.”

On the whole, Marassi really is an exceptional destination for all sorts of travellers, from families to couples on a romantic getaway and business travellers. It’s only a matter of time before the secret is out.
